His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is the current President of Malawi. Born on 18 July 1940 in Chisoka, Thyolo District, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is a distinguished Malawian lawyer, academic, and statesman. With a career spanning continents and disciplines, he brings to the presidency a wealth of experience in law, governance, and international diplomacy.
Professor Mutharika earned his LL.B. from the University of London, followed by LL.M. and J.S.D. degrees from Yale University, USA. He built a global reputation as a scholar of international economic law, comparative constitutional law, and international justice, teaching at prestigious institutions including Washington University in St. Louis.
Before entering active politics, he advised governments and international bodies on legal reforms and democratic transitions. In Malawi, he served in several ministerial roles Justice, Education, and Foreign Affairs under the administration of his late brother, President Bingu wa Mutharika.
In May 2014, Arthur Peter Mutharika was elected as the fifth President of Malawi, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). His presidency focused on infrastructure development, economic stabilization, educational reform, and strengthening public institutions.
